J. Rose Mamone
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my journey as an art educator and my commitment to weaving mindfulness into my work with students. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share what inspires me.
With nearly two decades of experience teaching art across public, private, and alternative education settings, I bring a rich and varied perspective to the classroom. Currently, I teach high school art, specializing in Sculpture, Global Arts & History, and Adaptive Art.
Prior to my current position as a public school art teacher, I taught art in various alternative and special education settings working with students with significant and diverse needs. These experiences helped shape my philosophy of education and how I approach teaching and learning. Since returning to public school teaching in 2015, I have had the fortune of continuing to work with special education students in my adaptive art classes.
My goal is to help my students build self-efficacy and a positive disposition towards art. I encourage them to be creative and go beyond the lesson parameters as a way to connect with their inner artist.
Art education has been shown to have a positive impact on student achievement. It teaches life lessons and skills that transfer to other subjects. It is, in my opinion, one of the best vehicles for practicing and exploring social-emotional learning. Art education has the power to re-spark an intrinsic inner drive to learn and explore the world. Although artmaking is work, it's fun work. When a student asks, "Why do we have to take art class?"; the only response I can find that sums it all up is, "because it's FUN!" It is fun to explore and experiment with artistic self-expression.
My background in martial arts, specifically Chinese internal martial arts, has influenced my philosophy of education and how I teach. I have been integrating mindfulness practices in my teaching for 19 years. I have come to appreciate the healing power of art, qigong, yoga and mindfulness to help us understand our experience and express our purpose. Integrating these modalities is integral to my teaching practice.

Art education is an excellent vehicle for practicing and exploring social-emotional learning. Art education has the power to re-spark an intrinsic inner drive to learn and explore the world. My focus is to empower students to express themselves artistically.
After attaining a black sash in Kung Fu, I wanted to expand my personal practice and ability to teach mind-body and mindfulness practices. I completed my 200 hour yoga teacher and SEL*F facilitator training with Breathe for Change in 2019. I continued my training with Breathe for Change in 2023 completing their 300 hr. yoga teacher training and T.E.A.C.H. Method certification (Trauma-informed, Equitable, Accessible, Community-based, Healing-centered). In addition, I have offered wellness and SEL*F classes for educators including Art & SEL, Yoga for Teachers and Mindfulness in the Classroom. I’ve led after-school yoga sessions for students in the 21st Century Program, while also incorporating wellness and mind-body practices into my art curriculum. Beyond the classroom, I’ve facilitated professional development workshops for educators focused on social-emotional learning and self-care, including 'Art & SEL,' 'Yoga for Teachers,' and 'Mindfulness in the Classroom.
Reflecting on my experience teaching adaptive art, I realized that I have honed a unique method for teaching adaptive art. This is an abilities focused method that incorporates SEL and community connections with individualized goals and arts focus goals. The Inner Hue Art Method empowers students through art with ability focused projects that foster students' connection to their inner artist and inspire a love of lifelong learning and creative expression.
